Best WhatsApp OTP Providers in 2026: 10 Options Compared

Compare 10 WhatsApp OTP providers on autofill, SMS fallback, sender branding, and pricing to find the right fit for your users and markets

Summary

WhatsApp OTP delivers verification codes in the app many users already have open, but it only converts where they actually have a WhatsApp account. The provider you choose decides how much of the routing, fallback, and pricing complexity you handle yourself. This guide compares 10 WhatsApp OTP providers on lifecycle coverage, autofill, fallback, sender identity, and pricing, from multi-channel verification APIs like Prelude Verify and Twilio Verify to building directly on Meta's Cloud API.

SMS has been the default channel for one-time passcodes for as long as most products have had a login screen. It still works. But in many markets it's no longer the channel your users actually open first.

That's why more teams are moving verification to WhatsApp and comparing the best WhatsApp OTP providers. In markets like Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, it's the app people already have open. Codes arrive over Wi-Fi, Meta charges only for messages that are delivered, and on Android, users can autofill the code with a single tap if your app supports it.

WhatsApp OTP isn't plug and play, though. Meta moved to per-message pricing in July 2025, and since October 1, 2026, 18 markets carry a higher authentication-international rate for high-volume businesses verifying users outside their home country. Users without a WhatsApp account never see the code. How much of that you handle yourself depends on the provider you pick.

So which WhatsApp OTP provider should you choose? The honest answer: it depends on where your users are, and how much of the verification layer you want to own.

In short: multi-channel verification APIs such as Prelude Verify, Twilio Verify, and Vonage Verify handle the full OTP lifecycle and fall back to SMS when WhatsApp can't deliver, with Prelude Verify picking the route for each user from live conversion data. Regional platforms like MSG91 and Gupshup suit India-first apps, and Meta's Cloud API is the route if you'd rather build verification yourself.

This guide compares 10 WhatsApp OTP providers on the criteria that matter for authentication specifically. Need a WhatsApp partner for marketing, support, or chat commerce instead? How We Evaluated WhatsApp OTP Providers

We scored each provider against six OTP-specific criteria, using each vendor's public documentation and pricing pages as of October 2026.

  1. Verification lifecycle: does the API generate, send, retry, and check the code, or only deliver a message you built yourself?

  2. Authentication templates: copy code support, plus Android one-tap autofill and zero-tap where documented.

  3. Fallback: automatic routing to SMS or another channel when a number isn't on WhatsApp or delivery fails.

  4. Sender identity: your own branded WhatsApp Business Account (WABA), or a provider-managed number.

  5. Pricing model: per-verification fee, per-message markup, or pass-through of Meta's rates.

  6. Fraud controls and access: built-in abuse protection, and whether you can start self-serve or must go through sales.

We excluded general WhatsApp BSPs built mainly for marketing and support, which are covered in our BSP guide. We also excluded verification APIs without a WhatsApp channel: Plivo's Verify documentation, for example, lists SMS and voice as its two delivery channels.

WhatsApp OTP Providers Compared at a Glance

As of October 2026, Prelude, Twilio, Vonage, and Telesign run the full OTP lifecycle with WhatsApp as one channel among several; Meta's Cloud API leaves code generation, retries, and fallback to you. "Not documented" means we found no public documentation for that capability, not that it's missing.

The 10 Best WhatsApp OTP Providers in 2026

1. Prelude Verify

Prelude Verify is a phone and email verification API that treats WhatsApp as one route in a multi-channel delivery system. It covers 230+ countries over SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, Zalo, and Silent Network Authentication, and picks the channel for each user. When a route fails, Prelude moves to the next best one across 30+ providers. (Prelude docs)

  • WhatsApp setup: you connect your own WhatsApp Business Account to Prelude through Meta's Embedded Signup, so codes arrive from your branded number. (setup guide)

  • Routing control: set preferred_channel to prioritize WhatsApp; Prelude keeps preferring it on retries while an untried WhatsApp route remains. (multi-routing docs)

  • Per-country routing: Prelude tracks the conversion rate of every provider and channel pair and picks the best route for each user, so WhatsApp is tried first only when it ranks best. You can set each country to prioritize price, balance, or conversion. (multi-routing docs)

  • Fraud: Prelude's Verify API detects and blocks fraud using models trained on tens of millions of data points, and blocked responses expose the risk factors behind the block.

  • Pricing: €0.032 per verification on Pay As You Go, plus message costs passed through at zero markup. A WhatsApp message to the US costs €0.0028, against €0.0039 for SMS. Prelude sells verifications, not messages, so it has no incentive to inflate your WhatsApp or SMS volume. (pricing)

Best for: developer teams in fintech and consumer apps that want WhatsApp OTP without managing per-country channel logic.

2. Twilio Verify

Twilio Verify adds WhatsApp to its existing OTP API with a one-word change: set Channel=whatsapp instead of sms. Since March 2024, Twilio requires you to bring your own WhatsApp sender, and Verify auto-creates copy code authentication templates in multiple languages.

  • Fallback: a WhatsApp verification falls back to SMS by default when the SMS channel is enabled. WhatsApp-first routing by country is a pilot you request through sales.

  • Limits: no custom or pre-approved templates, and no routing choice on WhatsApp.

  • Pricing: $0.05 per successful verification, plus a WhatsApp channel fee billed only on confirmed delivery.

Best for: teams already running Twilio Verify for SMS. Both Twilio and Prelude charge a verification fee on top of message costs: $0.05 per successful verification for Twilio, €0.032 per verification for Prelude on Pay As You Go. See our Twilio alternatives guide.

3. Vonage Verify

Vonage Verify v2 builds each verification as a workflow, an ordered list of channels such as Silent Authentication, SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, and voice. You need your own WABA, and Verify can detect when a user lacks WhatsApp and fall back automatically.

Pricing: on the default Verify Conversion plan, €0.052 per successful verification, plus messaging fees on every attempt, including WhatsApp attempts that don't convert. A sales-led Verify Success plan charges a per-country price only on successful verifications.

  • Zero-tap: set mode to zero_tap on the WhatsApp channel for Android users.

  • Workflow control: you can trigger the next workflow step manually through the API.

Best for: teams that want explicit control over channel order and Android zero-tap out of the box.

4. Telesign Verify API

Telesign's Verify API unifies SMS, Silent Verification, Push, Email, WhatsApp, Viber, and RCS behind one integration, with fallback when the preferred channel fails.

  • WhatsApp templates: authentication templates only, with the OTP as the only variable. Templates need approval from Telesign and WhatsApp. Copy code and one-tap autofill are both supported.

  • Access: you contact a Telesign expert to enable the product.

Best for: enterprises pairing WhatsApp OTP with phone intelligence and fraud scoring.

5. Sinch Verification API

The Sinch Verification API verifies numbers by SMS, flash call, phone call, carrier data, and WhatsApp. You pick WhatsApp by setting the verification method to whatsapp.

Pricing: Sinch bills verification per request. Its docs publish the billing basis for SMS and flash call, but WhatsApp rates sit in the Sinch dashboard and aren't public.

Best for: teams that want WhatsApp alongside flash call and seamless data verification from one vendor.

6. Infobip

Infobip sends WhatsApp OTPs as authentication template messages from a registered WhatsApp Business Platform sender, billed per delivered message with the Meta fee included. Note that Infobip's 2FA API documentation lists SMS, voice, and email as its OTP channels, so WhatsApp OTP runs through the WhatsApp API rather than the managed 2FA flow.

Best for: enterprises already using Infobip for WhatsApp messaging that want OTP on the same contract.

7. Bird Verify

Bird Verify (from MessageBird) treats WhatsApp as an orderable channel in a per-country plan, with SMS next in line. You can connect your own WhatsApp Business number and authentication template, or send from a Bird-managed number under the Bird Verify or Authifly identity. If a message doesn't land, Bird moves to the next channel in your routing plan automatically.

Pricing: no separate Verify fee. You pay the WhatsApp rate for each code sent, and each resend or fallback counts as an extra send at its channel's rate.

Best for: teams that want to launch WhatsApp OTP before their own WABA is ready, using a Bird-managed sender.

8. MSG91

MSG91 offers WhatsApp OTP through its SendOTP APIs and Login with OTP widget. You can set WhatsApp as the primary channel per country and retry over SMS, WhatsApp, or voice. You subscribe with an active WhatsApp business number. MSG91 also notes that authentication templates can't be delivered from one WABA to another, so test with a consumer account.

Pricing: MSG91 charges its WhatsApp template rate per message processed, plus a platform fee of ₹500 per month per WhatsApp number from the third month. The OTP widget itself carries no extra charge.

Best for: India-first apps that also need DLT-compliant SMS from the same vendor.

9. Gupshup

Gupshup supports WhatsApp authentication templates through its Unify panel, and each template must include a copy code, one-tap autofill, or zero-tap button. Media isn't supported in authentication templates.

Pricing: Gupshup adds a fee of $0.001 per message on top of Meta's fee, which it bills at actuals. Its pricing page labels the fee as applying to all messages but doesn't call out authentication templates explicitly.

Best for: high-volume businesses in India and emerging markets that also run marketing and chatbot flows on WhatsApp.

10. Meta WhatsApp Cloud API (direct)

Going direct to Meta's Cloud API removes provider markup: you pay only Meta's per-message rates. You also own everything a verification API normally handles: code generation, expiry, retries, rate limiting, fraud checks, and fallback to SMS. (Meta pricing)

Meta supports all three authentication template types. One-tap and zero-tap work only on Android; iOS users see a copy code button instead. (Meta templates)

Best for: teams with dedicated engineering capacity and a single-market user base. Our build vs buy guide covers the tradeoffs.

How to Choose a WhatsApp OTP Provider

The right WhatsApp OTP provider depends on where your users are, and how much of the verification layer you want to own. Four questions settle most decisions.

1. What will you actually pay per verified user?

Since July 1, 2025, Meta charges per delivered message, priced by category and the recipient's country code. Authentication messages get volume tiers that reset monthly and accrue per market across your whole business portfolio. (Meta pricing)

Providers then add their own layer: a per-verification fee (Prelude, Twilio, Vonage), a per-message fee on top of Meta's rate (Gupshup), a per-message price that bundles Meta's fee (Infobip), a per-code channel rate with no verification fee (Bird), or nothing at all if you go direct to Meta. Model cost per successful verification, including retries and SMS fallback, not just the WhatsApp message rate.

2. Will authentication-international rates apply to you?

As of October 1, 2026, 18 markets have an authentication-international rate, which Meta sets higher than the standard authentication rate. It applies to businesses based outside the recipient's country that send more than 750,000 messages outside customer service windows to users in these markets in a rolling 30-day period. Meta sends a 30-day notice before these charges begin and lets you set a Primary Business Location. (Meta pricing) Ask each provider how it handles eligibility and whether it shows the rate applied per message.

3. What happens when WhatsApp isn't an option?

WhatsApp isn't guaranteed to out-convert SMS everywhere. It can only reach users who have a WhatsApp account, so in markets where WhatsApp is a minority app, SMS is likely to stay the stronger channel. And where local SMS already performs well, the gain from switching may be small. That's why it pays to choose a provider that picks the channel per destination instead of applying one global default. Prelude's Verify API does this by default, ranking WhatsApp, SMS, and other routes on live conversion data for each user.

Some users don't have WhatsApp, and some numbers can't receive authentication templates. Prefer providers that detect this and move to the next channel automatically. Prelude's Verify API, for example, retries on the next best route across channels and providers instead of resending on the same failed path. For the routing patterns themselves, see the fallback section of our WhatsApp OTP guide.

4. Whose name appears on the code?

Most providers now require your own WABA, so users see your brand. Bird also offers a Bird-managed sender as an alternative. A branded sender builds trust; a shared sender saves setup time.

Opt-in, template rules, and code security controls apply whichever provider you choose. Our WhatsApp OTP implementation guide covers them in detail.

FAQs

What is the best WhatsApp OTP provider in 2026?

The best WhatsApp OTP provider depends on where your users are and how much of the verification layer you want to build. Multi-channel verification APIs such as Prelude Verify, Twilio Verify, and Vonage Verify run the full OTP lifecycle and fall back to SMS when WhatsApp can't deliver. Prelude Verify also picks the route for each user from live conversion data and charges messages at cost. MSG91 and Gupshup suit India-first apps, and Meta's Cloud API suits teams building their own verification layer.

What's the difference between a WhatsApp OTP provider and a WhatsApp BSP?

A WhatsApp Business Solution Provider gives you access to the WhatsApp Business Platform for any use case, often with inboxes and campaign tools. A WhatsApp OTP provider is a verification API that generates, sends, and checks codes, with WhatsApp as one delivery channel. Prelude is both a Meta BSP and a verification API. See our BSP comparison for messaging-focused options.

Do WhatsApp OTP providers charge for undelivered messages?

Meta charges only for delivered messages. Provider fees vary: Twilio, for example, charges its $0.05 verification fee only on successful verifications and bills WhatsApp messages only on confirmed delivery, while Prelude charges per verification and passes message costs through at zero markup. Check whether a provider bills retries and SMS fallback separately.

Can I use WhatsApp OTP without my own WhatsApp Business Account?

Usually not. Twilio and Vonage both require your own WABA, and Prelude's WhatsApp setup connects your own WABA so codes come from your branded number. Bird Verify is the exception among these providers: you can connect your own number or send from a Bird-managed number under its Bird Verify or Authifly identity.

Does WhatsApp OTP autofill work on iPhone?

No. Meta's one-tap autofill and zero-tap templates work only on Android. iOS users see a copy code button, which still saves them from typing the code.

Get WhatsApp OTP Without Managing the Routing

Picking a WhatsApp OTP provider is really picking who handles the failures: users without WhatsApp, markets where SMS still converts better, and routes that fail mid-flow.

Prelude's Verify API is built for exactly that. It routes each verification across WhatsApp, SMS, RCS, Telegram, Viber, Zalo, and Silent Network Authentication, sends from your own branded WhatsApp number, blocks fraud before it costs you, and adds no markup to message costs.

Start for free or book a demo to model your WhatsApp OTP costs by country.

SMS has been the default channel for one-time passcodes for as long as most products have had a login screen. It still works. But in many markets it's no longer the channel your users actually open first.
